Whatever happened to people using symbolic links and saving images as md5 hash?

I save images with their Pixiv filenames too, and I recently came up with a "tagging" system that solves the problem of not changing the filename or file contents. Basically I have my pictures in a loose directory (I'm thinking of sorting them by character) and then I create symbolic links to them in these directories. Of course I can make multiple symlinks to the same file, so a picture of Alice might be linked in actions/smile, character/alice, clothes/yellow_hair, clothes/no_hat, numbers/single, and setting/gensokyo.

Now it's pretty easy to use the standard programs to, say, search for images where a group of characters are smiling, or all group images without Flandre.
Of course, I'm nowhere near done. I have thousands of images, and this current hierarchy represents a few hundred of them. I definitely need to add more directories, and I'm debating whether or not to have "negatives" like "no_hat".
