I don't get it either. Sumireko is a such a solid character.

Unlike Renko and Mary, she's actually a part of the series and interacts with the cast. She's somewhat clever, passionate, curious, critical and it's fun to watch her learn to fear youkai and struggle with Gensokyo reality.

She's one of the nicer characters in the series and goes along well with Reimu, Marisa, Kasen, Kourin, Mokou, Aya...

Her interest in the occult and moving to Gensokyo gives her tons of room to develop as a character and get involved. Not to mention give her an interesting outsider viewpoing.

Plus, her bluntness is nothing short of amusing. Even her looks were clearly designed with care and creativity.
