I think the Outrage Trilogy was "too Japanese" for the worldwide audience, despite being yakuza films, a genre accepted by foreigners. Unlike Kitano's earlier yakuza films that had Kitano's melancholic style, his trademark so to speak, the Outrage Trilogy had many v-cinema troupes. It was more like an early Miike-esque film. That's a niche sub-genre within a niche genre. I've seen some of the so called /tv/fags bashing the trilogy due to that. It's not for everyone. Personally, as a hardcore Beat/Kitano Takeshi fan, I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed all of his other works.
