Autopickup is in for the Lua rewrite
and autoexplore
and autoplanting
and autodigging
and custom dungeons
and custom gods
and MIDI music
and test suites
and various catastrophic bugs
and it still needs several hundred hours of work for playability...

Here is the way autopickup was implemented. I'm not sure if implementing such a mod could be made any simpler at this point.
