EP4 is my favourite as well. It's the first chapter that begins the process of fulfilling the thematic foreshadowing of Beatrice's monologue in EP2, and does so in an emotionally devastating fashion through Ange and Maria, as well as the first time in the story where you start to really understand why the metafictional nesting structure was necessary for the narrative rather than just a gimmick. The relatively light and comic scenes at Rokkenjima were a great way to offset that shift in focus from the events on Rokkenjima to the epistemological questions that become the main narrative interest in the Answer arcs.

Yeah, I had the same skeptical response to the new characters in the second episode but ended up liking all of them. Maria is a special case because she reminded me of myself as a child in a lot of very specific ways so I always loved her. I was also unsure about Ange at first if only because introducing a secondary protagonist so relatively deep into a story is always dicey, but she became one of my favourite characters in fairly short order.

Ange's entire life is pretty depressing. I don't want to replay Umineko because of my memories of just being an absolute wreck about half the time through episode 4.
