Prior to the invasion of poland he attempted to get them into the anti-comintern pact which would've made poland a ally against russia. When that failed he made a pact with russia to split poland in a attempt to deter the allies as they would have two great powers to deal with.

Poland would've been fucked over pretty hard either way, so it's not like allying with germany was a great idea.
