This happens to them all the time because they don't pay attention in general. The only moment I can think of that makes no sense to a newcomer is this substory because it's a direct fanservice-y callback to all the events in the future. Even the Ryuji encounter can simply be interpreted as another wacky side story if you didn't understood the significance. There's nothing in the actual plot that requires preexisting knowledge, which makes sense because it's a prequel, nor do you lose anything from not possessing said knowledge. Oh no, people don't have a Wikipedia knowledge of who Saejima is. What a loss!
Lastly, playing K1 first will spoil the outcome of Y0. That in itself is an immense waste when Y0's greatest strength was its story.
