A visual novel, unlike manga or anime, allows you to choose which heroine the protag is going to shack up with.

For the most part.

Like manga, a VN is a very cost-effective way of getting a story up and running without having to pull together a studio to make an anime right away. I approve of anything that lowers the bar for entry so that more content can make it into popular media.
