The Balrog argument is in a nutshell, an argument about them having wings.
In Peter Jackson's movies, the one you see has wings, but in the book, it's a bit more complicated, as there's a passage saying "His enemy [Gandalf's] halted again, facing him, and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings."
So there are two differents "answers". Either the balrog has wings, or he doesn't have any real forme and it just looks like it's having wings.

The problem comes from the fact that Balrog are supposed to be human in shape, and Gandalf also explains that the Balrog fell to his death after the Khazad-Dum battle. However, since it's supposed to have wings, it shoulda been able to avoid that fate.
Peter Jackson tried to explain this by having Mithrandir deliver a critical strike to the Balrog, leaving it dying as it fell.

So yeah, that whole thing reminded me your argument, as you said that Yorihime might not be a goddess because there are no sources saying she is one.
Kinda like the Balrog's wings.
