I'm obsessed with uniformity and versatility, so I never wound up getting into the crazy nidzilla type character builds.

Once I figured out that dropping Faith enough basically makes you immune to magic, every playthrough's been ALL MONKS ALL THE TIME ATATATATA

It was the PSX era. Even SNES RPGs had switches to allow specific characters to either appear and speak in turn or not based on whether the player had chosen them for the party at the beginning (Seiken Densetsu 3) or had switched them into the main party at the time (Final Fantasy 6/7). These were Square games, so there's no excuse for FFT.
