They sleep a lot, but it's not constant. They do tend to doze off when they're comfy, but they are aware of what's going on around them.
The one surefire way to wake them up is to leave the immediate area, which causes them to wake up in a bit of a panic to find you.

In any case I have no doubt you could do date thing with them, just prepare for her to be a bit drowsy most of the time.
Taking them to movies might be kinda weird. It's virtually guaranteed that they'd fall asleep on your shoulder/lap, but they could still tell you what happened in the movie afterwards.
