It's quite evil. Where old Higurashi had meaning even in violence and madness, the new one is brutal and mad for it's own sake, an exercise in nihilism and a submission to determinism. Keeping in mind the two decades of difference it didn't ruin old Higurashi for me, however it did completely wreck 07th, Ryukishi, and the studio Passione in my eyes.
If you haven't read/watched Rei, or watched Kira that would be a good pallete cleanser for watching after. The Saikoroshi-hen story of Rei is especially incompatible with Sotsu.
