do visual novels have any delusional or suicidal effect on people?

i knew this japanese guy from school
we were both into anime, manga, and video games, and became friends pretty fast
he moved back to japan one day due to family issues, but we still stayed in touch over the internet

he started really getting into visual novels and eroge
i didn't know japanese, so i only tried a few of the ones available in english
he told me he was playing this really weird one he got off IRC
he says the main character showed a lot of reluctance following his choices and not pursuing the main heroine
then he tells me the character in the game became aware of his existence and started talking to him and questioning him with yes/no choice answers
i figured he was probably just high and didn't put much thought into it

one day he tells me that he has no memory of anything that happens if the game is not on and in front of him and whatever happens to the main character seems to physically affect him
i ask him to send the game to me so that i can try it, but no matter how he uploaded or tried sending me the file i kept getting a corrupt .zip file

after i didn't see him online or reply to any of my e-mails for like 2 months and i decide to call his house
his mom tells me he set fire to his computer and went missing weeks ago
i still talk to his mom from time to time, but never heard from him again
