i don't find the hierarchy strange, what's weird to me is calling them pets and not servants, retainers, slaves, etc. for example, calling sakuya remilia's pet would be rather derogatory but calling utsuho a pet is the norm
modern culture is dominated by western liberalism and it teaches all men are equal and deserve rights and freedom, which is why most people don't like the concept of servitude even if voluntary. i personally think that's ridiculous and hierarchy is fundamental to humans, but people give me weird looks if i say it should be legal to own people
