Sol Press actually said they are working on a solution to offer an R18 physical release as an upgrade during the Backerkit.

They seem to be attempting to please everyone, which from a consumer standpoint is great but could easily lead to them getting in over their heads. Something like the free patch is in line with most of the companies these days, and they just have a stronger attitude than other companies ("patches should always be free" vs "We can only advertise the patch on Steam if we have it free"). Even making it HD is probably more of a requirement to deal with an older 800x600 title today. Some other things they are doing won't do much for sales and in some cases (such as offering multiple physical releases of all ages and R18 if they go through with that), will likely incur significant extra costs. Even something like honorifics, you do have a mix of preferences with the audience, but it probably won't do enough sales wise to justify the costs of the increased work on the script and the increase in technical work and testing that will be required. Even if everything works out here though, it is unlikely to be sustainable with other titles that appear to already be in the pipeline. For Sakura Sakura itself though, despite all the good will it is sure to get from going above and beyond what is normally expected, it still may truggle because it is an older not widely known title without much standing out about it, and they'll probably have a hard time breaking even with the sheer amount of Kickstarter goods being offered unless they exceed their $24k goal by a large margin. .

With regards to the Steam price though, they don't want to run into the issue of the Steam launch being cheaper than the Kickstarter, but they would be better off bumping the on Steam price to $35 and adding a 10% discount for launch than launching at $30 without a launch sale.
