This is the " 'otaku' stuff that doesn't really fit on /a/ or /v/" board. That's it, that's all.

I am a teaching intern at a school near my house for level 1 Japanese. The teacher is a bit on the older side and is a native Japanese speaker who has been teaching in California for 10+ years. The students in the class are a not much younger than I am, so for the first few days, they didn't give me too much respect. Today I was told to command more respect from them in private, so she brought in a cultural addition to my internship. She now refers to me as the class's "Senpai" and is enforcing that every student shall now call me "Senpai" or "[Yosuke]-Senpai."

TL;DR - You will never be called Senpai by a highschooler of any background.
