It attempted that but as soon as we knew Gen was writing it people weren't exactly surprised. It didn't do anything "different or original" the whole show is litreally just Kamen Rider Ryuki but with cute girls drawn by Ume.

Madoka wasn't even revolutionary to the industry, there's tons of Utsuge that got adapted if you think "Nice and happy then suddenly, suffering!" is something new you've clearly not watched much at all. Madoka wasn't even the first show to do something with the magical girl genre just look at things like Nanoha and Utena.

If you honestly think something is objectively bad because of it's genre then you're retarded, it's a huge generalisation and is no different than how people look down on different medium of storytelling rather than the story itself.
