That's the main difference between him and people that copied him.

People that copied JRR thought that people who are immortal or at least really REALLY long-lived would be dicks about it and consider mortals as a "lesser race".

The reality of Tolkien's works however was that the elves were friend to all the good peoples of Middle Earth. They didn't even dislike the dwarves, the shit between them was almost entirely one-sided. They weren't arrogant, they were just more concerned with how things played out in the long term, and had a natural reason to be paranoid of outsiders because there were massive orc strongholds parked right next door to their cities.
