That is a bit the answer I was expecting but surely you would agree that using Anki English -> Japanese is harder and yields better results than learning Japanese -> English. I feel like the latter still encourages you to "think" in English. That was more or less my thought in the previous, if I want to be able to fluently read things I need to know things to a point where I can actively reproduce them and why not simply train doing that instead of trying to force it by torturing myself through a crazy amount of text? It has to be at least worth a shot.
