I think it's just the general setting of "adulthood" that makes the characters of Umineko much more appealing to me. The family drama between the siblings, Rosa having relationship problems and problems being a single mother, Battler's dynamic with his father and growing into an adult himself, Kyrie's relationship problems, Natsuhi's issues with marriage and settling in to the family. They're all like pretty mundane on the face of it but when compared to most other Japanese media it's refreshing. I think that's part of the reason why I prefer Umineko's family squabbles over gold to Higurashi. I can't remember the specific quote or who it was by, but it reminds me of the idea that otakus are just permanently stuck in their childhood and that's why so much anime/manga/whatever media focuses on like teenagers. It's probably not true and the real reason is that that's just the primary demographic, but still - Higurashi's "power of friendship" dynamic group of like 14 year olds will never be as interesting to me as the group of morally shitty siblings scheming over the gold while abusing their children lol.
