I have been pretty much alone for the past 7 years or so. I was kicked out of high school since I had real bad social phobia and was not attending. I have basically spent the past few years waking up..drinking tea...and sitting on the internet. I fund this through what is basically welfare. I have not had any friends since high school and even then I didn't really have any. I'd say I qualify as being pretty fucking NEETy.

To top it off, as long as I can afford internet bills each month I have no desire to change. What's the point? I'm happy how I am and don't have any urge to participate in society by wasting 80k on a degree so I can work for 50 years and retire.

There are a million ways to make money online. I write editorials in a local news paper every so often about world affairs, like war and politics, and I get paid a little bit for the writing. I had an essay once in a newsmagazine that was bought for 800 dollars. You can also get money from ads, and buying/selling stuff. When I was young I was into piracy, demoscene and some hacking and you can make money this way if you know how. Use your imagination.

Combine this with unemployment money from government, welfare, or disability, and it's enough to live.

During 2009, there was an average of around 2600 suicides a month in Japan. They tend to hover around 30'000 suicides an average every year, but since the recession (which hit them badly) the rates have gone even higher.

And yes, roof tops are a popular way. But most of them usually die by either jumping off coastal areas, or various poisoning methods, such as charcoal barbecues, hydrogen sulfide (easy to make), or overdoses of easily available alcohol and pills.

They're not THE highest in the world - they're about 9th place - but they still have a fuck load of suicides there.
