Bodyweight exercises (ie just you moving your own body, no added weight) are pretty useless unless you're pushing yourself to the absolute limit. Basically go until you can't anymore.

If you're adding weight, which you should be, start out with just the bar and do 3 sets of 5-8. Over time as you get stronger you can increase the number of reps and once you're easily doing 3x8 it's time to increase the weight. Getting form down is the most important thing first. There's plenty of youtube tutorials to get you started, and obviously >>>/fit/ if you actually want to get into it.

If you can't even manage squatting normally yet you need to get your diet under control ASAP, that's more important than the exercise bit.
