Just to add all mastering does is polish the track, not remove errors in the mix. If your premaster sounds like crap, it's still gonna sound like crap regardless of how many limiters/compressors you slap on the master.

If you're talking about non-organic stuff, most packs are released with minimal processing as to accommodate for any type of mixdown. You'd rather compress a sample yourself (say in edm where your master is probably brickwalled to hell) instead of trying to 'uncompress' a pre-processed sample

Likewise in an orchestral you might leave some low-end in a sample to preserve its timbre rather than cutting it too much that it begins to sound artificial

doesn't matter. People can mix with -6db or -1db but the main point is to keep your dynamics as constant as possible (assuming you're not making something that goes from ppp to fff)

Most people who rely on limiters to make their track 'work' often have trouble controlling/fixing the peaks in their mixdowns. As long as the dynamic range is fairly consistent throughout the track, you should be fine.

Of course, how much range to leave entirely depends on context. Are you making a edm track (1st waveform) or something more analog (2nd waveform)?
