I know there is some VN in which you could consider the MC to be 'superfuous', but that's exactly while I likened it to a dish missing salt.

In a VN with a bland/inexistent MC you can still feel the taste, you can still appreciate the plot. But the MC is the eyes through which the story is told, the one whose thoughts should give a particular lens through which the story is seen.
If you're going to give me a faceless protagonist, don't have one at all. Just give me a narrator point of view and I'll be happier, compared to having a placeholder character whose sole reason of existence is letting people like pic related have a place in the story.
