Apparently your interpretation of this scene stems entirely from a misunderstanding of what ruby text is. Yes, some chuuni writes sometimes use it to have double meanings but the normal usage is indeed "to say the exact same thing twice". Again, the ruby text is to indication pronunciation. There's nothing "haha funny" here. It seems the TL left it in English because he personally thought it was funny and didn't understand the usage or did but didn't care.
