You'll probably get as many different answers as there are players.
I'm a bit on the opposite side of the spectrum, starting with SA and moving on to other games. Took me a week to get normal 1cc and you can check pic related for relative dates on later 1ccs. I had a huge hiatus between Lunatic and Ultra Lunatic though. Got my LNB around the time I got ultra but I don't have the replay on me.
I don't have previous shmup experience but I am pretty good at games considered "hard" in general. I played Super Hexagon(fast paced gap finding) at a very high level before Touhou, which probably helped me get my sea legs faster.
