I think the modern style is just too sterile.

For example look at this. If this was a modern anime the lines would all be smooth and without gaps. Also the colors would be more saturated. The mecha would probably be CG too. And the image would be perfectly sharp. Without this slight fuzziness old anime has.

It's kinda the same with digital cameras nowadays. It's why old images taken on film give you a warm feeling.
