The story begins in the very first chapter; the Beato vs Battler 'game' in the second one. The nature of the world, as well as the truth behind the tales, is being explored in the third and fourth episodes, and the fifth and sixth ones develop and further deepen the narrative surrounding the Rokkenjima incident.
If you believe that the story would work without the question arcs, or that Battler's entire journey was meaningless, you might want to reread the VN, but slower this time.
