I fully agree with your stressing of drawing from life/reference. I just didn't want to let pass that confusion between tone and color specific functions, cause I think that's the reason why any or both abilities (to render shapes accurately disregard the color and to use colors wisely) get eventually hindered by each other if not addressed separately from early on.
