Fundamentally, this conversation is not about otaku culture but about culture as a whole.

A lot of social labels are being stretched, not just the "otaku" label, because there's a wider identity crisis going on right now. There's a flood of posers going into the cultures of PUNKS, TECHIES, TRANS PEOPLE, GAMERS, OTAKU, et cetera. This might be because the identification with a label comes with: some internal sense of purpose in a time when purpose is scarce or difficult to grasp, an external "brand" to appeal to for the sake of getting your ideas heard (often by potential social media followings), and easy search terms to use in order to find resources or communities curated by like-minded people. This is why it grows & sells and why those sales must appropriate "otaku" terms in their messaging.

Ending the identity crisis means not only ending the fake otaku phenomenon but also calming down the political landscape and social media influencer / stan culture, both of which are also heralded by people needing a sense of direction. People just need SOMETHING to live and die for, and these subcultures are the things standing in for that SOMETHING, at least for the time being.

Already in the wired. Will be even in death. So you see, it really doesn't matter. Might as well live out in this body while I can, but I bear no attachment to it whatsoever.
