How do you still feel close to your waifu after you've finished whatever anime/manga/eroge that she's from?

When I play an eroge I feel like the characters are alive and I fall in love, but as soon as it's over they just stop being real and the loneliness comes back. How do people have waifus that they've had for years? I want to have that too, but I think it would feel like looking at pictures of my dead wife rather than actually feeling like she's alive and with me.
