This is really the biggest part of the job. They do their best, but a lot of the time what I call "translator cadence" comes out, where a sentence just doesn't feel right when you say it aloud/do more than just skim it. The translator needs to keep to a quick schedule because only they can move forward - I'm there to catch what I think needs improvement, and I can still work faster than they can translate. If they take time to make every line perfect, they waste my time waiting for them to progress, since I can't.

And frankly, a lot of the time, the original author is himself a shit. There was an entire scene in FF2 that basically had to be rewritten because the adjectives and viewpoint character's internal monologue were completely out of character for him; there was this sudden scatological turn to every single adjective and the character was suddenly trying to give the heroine a literal prolapse with every thrust. (Our current hypothesis was that the listed author couldn't bring themselves to research anal sex properly, so they had someone else write the scene who was much worse at writing in general, AND had a fanfiction-tier knowledge of how anal sex works.)

The translator can't be assed to fix this kind of thing, they'll give the most faithful translation they can, but make a note that anuses do not self lubricate with "intestinal fluids". I'll go and write in a proper anal sex scene in its place, because good lord, those lines would become new doujin-dialogue reaction images otherwise.

Honestly, I think I'm getting better at it. It helps that I made a chart of phonemes to consult without having to say it aloud again and again.
