「たい」 (e.g. in「食べたい」) is an adjective, right? so why can it be used with 「を」?

e.g.
>ケーキを食べたい
there can't be an object in this sentence since there is no verb (besides the implicit copula, but the copula doesn't take 「を」 so that shouldn't be of any relevance), so why is it acceptable to use the object particle?

I am a newb, and my onahole always makes me blow my load in an embarrassingly short amount of time. Obviously this makes the experience less pleasurable because it's over so fast.
