tl:dr - it's about the pressure of having to conform to society's expectations. The expectations of others and their ideal of a happy life. It also warns against escapism and basically just tells you that you need to find your own happiness and in the end it's your own duty to be happy and no one else's responsibility. It's like 1984 in the sense that the song manifests into two possibly contradicting meanings at the same time, similar to the concept of doublethink.
