i didn't do RTK but i don't think kanji is hard... i learn new ones as i encounter them, via vocab

the ones i already know make it easier to learn new words with them... because i remember the reading/meaning from past words. 80% of new words i encounter now only consist of kanji i've seen before, with readings i've seen before (although there are some words that don't follow rules when it comes to readings and that can be annoying but still, RTK wouldn't prevent that either)

and when i encounter kanji with different meanings that look similar, i take note of what radical makes them different, sometimes make a lil nnemonic in japanese (like with the ゆう's in 憂鬱 vs 優先, 人に優しくして;しないと心配する。), and then i usually remember from then on......

i think RTK has some good methods in it, like mnemonics and breaking down by radicals when there are similar looking kanji. i just think it's not necessary for every kanji, and that you can do a lot of that on the fly as you learn vocab. making nnemonics USING japanese has been very helpful for me. you can't do that if you can't even read or make coherent sentences yet.
