That entire segment felt weird and contradictory, given that Meakashi already had Satoshi mention how Teppei and his wife didn't give a shit about them until they smelled money. They were also established to be notoriously shitty neighbours, so trying to push the blame for their actions towards the Houjou siblings onto the rest of the villagers is just bizarre at that point.
