You know how, when someone (not necessarily human, can be animals as well) with a desire for vengence dies, it might create a vengeful spirit? Well, petroleum is basically made from the remains of countless creatures, so you can imagine the result. It's basically a huge soup with all the resentments of past living beings, something bad enough even the oni don't approach this shit.

Still, it is incredibly useful, which introduces the concept of greed. Don't care how bad it is if it can bring me power, money, or fame.

There's obviously a not-so-hidden message here. During the Yorigami sisters route, Yuuma says that humans in the outside world are using tons of it even though they know very well what it really is. The sisters themselves didn't knew the true nature of the stuff, but still want to keep it all to make money.
