Remember that water flows out from the gill slits, across the respiratory surface of each gill. This means the water has to enter from somewhere else--an open mouth or a spiracle.

This dissection is from the lower jaw to the pectoral girdle. Sharks have their heart and gills in their throats. Wherever you place the gills along the Atlantean body wall, you must account for the flow of water into them. I would recommend including a spiracle between the clavicle and shoulder blade if you must keep the gills in the thorax.
