I wouldn't say that, the original sprites still had its own exaggerated expressions. If anything, it was limited by Ryukishi's drawing skill.
Unless you're specifically talking about the stupid bleeding-from-the-eyes CG, I agree that one is overdoing it. I can understand trying to spice up some horror, but that one was unnecessary.
