Sponsons are not inherently weapon mounts, but they can be used as one.

They're not the covers to the tracks, however they are parts of the hull itself that stick out over the treads.

The M4 Sherman has sponsons, but there are no guns in them. See how the hull extends over the treads? Those areas would be considered sponsons.

/ Helicopters and boats have sponsons too.
