That's the whole point of American right-wing populism. It allows people to attack a phantom coalition of liberal intellectuals and racial minorities. This helps the person feel that they belong to a nation of "true Americans" that is purged of anyone who dares to think differently or say anything that is triggering to fragile conservative feelings.
