They'd only talk shit behind your back. They're very nice up front and many help tourists that are lost or looking for something. Few would actually deny you entry or give you attitude. They do that more if you live there rather than visiting, they know you'll leave eventually. Japan is rated one of the safest and kindest places to visit for a reason.
At least this was before the pandemic, I won't go for a while until everything is settled, I'm sure they hate that their country is trying to reopen and they're still having cases, we probably look like plague rats coming over on ships.
