It was nice enough until one day Anon confided in her that he had an eye on a pretty girl in the village and asked her for advice on what he could do to get her attention. Meiling didn't like that but threw out some general advice for his sake. Later that night Meiling meditated on what exactly it was that she felt towards Anon. It wasn't simple friendship anymore. If it were then she would have been happy for him and offered him more meaningful advice. Meiling thought about how dreary her days would become if he no longer came by because he found someone else to spend his time with. She didn't want to return to those days when all she had to look forward to was an afternoon nap. After ruminating on that thought for a while, she decided that she was overthinking it. These kinds of things rarely work out anyways. Meiling was sure that next time she saw him, he'd probably be disappointed by the rejection and require some comforting that she would be more than happy to provide.

Unfortunately, that was not the case. The next time that she saw him, he gave her the news that her advice worked and that he was going to have dinner with that village girl later in the week. Meiling was barely able to feign some happiness towards the news before telling him that she had some business to attend to in the garden today and that he should probably go. Of course, she didn't actually have anything to do on the other side of the gate. All she did was wallow in sadness, thinking that he was lost to her now. That sorrow soon turned into anger. Why should she give up the happiness she found to some village whore? Meiling decided that if this girl wanted Anon so badly then she would have to take him from her by force.

The next day, Anon returned with some terrible news. As he approached the mansion gates, he noticed that Meiling seemed to be in a much better mood than the previous day. He was glad that at least someone seemed to be having a good day, given the nature of his visit. The gatekeeper cheerfully wished Anon a good afternoon before taking note of his glum expression. He told her about how his date had been cancelled indefinitely on account of the date having been savagely beaten the night prior. According to what little information the girl was able to give, the perpetrator was a hooded figure wearing a mask depicting a dragon. The figure challenged her to a duel, which she declined on account of not being a fighter, but the mysterious figure refused to take no for an answer and attacked her anyways. The assault did not last long but it left her bloodied, battered, and broken. Before the figure left, it left a warning to her to stay away from Anon. He expressed his worry to Meiling. Why would anyone do something this terrible, citing him as the reason? She gave him a pat on the back and told him not to worry. There is no need for him to fear any mysterious masked figures because she'll protect him from anyone who would try to do him harm. He thanked her but he still seemed a bit worried. In this she saw a golden opportunity. She pulled him into a side hug and offered to let him stay with her for a while. The groundskeeper's quarters that she lived in on the mansion grounds wasn't the largest but it had plenty of room for a second person. It certainly sounded safer to Anon than returning to his one person home with who knows what watching him, so he took her up on that offer. Meiling was overjoyed to hear it and announced that she would cook him some of her famous Chinese cuisine on that very night. Anon was glad to have a friend like her and felt better about the situation already.

As did Meiling. Now she had plenty of time to show Anon why she was the only woman that he needed in his life. If she needed more time then all she would have to do is bring the "mysterious masked figure" out of hiding to remind him that there was still danger abound.
