There are cases where all torpedoes converge to the same target but it's pretty rare. The general rule of thumb is the more enemy you have, the higher chance of getting a crit. What's the level of your subs? Low level subs get damage easily but their fast repair time compensate it. Once they are properly leveled, they get rarely get crit.

Huh, I don't usually get my subs hit that hard at the boss node, and when they do get hit hard I have 3 Imuyas, 2 Goyas and 2 Ikus (I just got a 3rd but I haven't got her ready yet) for rotation while the damaged subs get docked so it's not really that big of a problem.

Also not like diamond formation is good for defending against subs anyway (only good for attacking subs; pic related) so I don't worry that much about it unless 2 CLs/DDs are still alive at the end of the preemptive torpedo strike but it's still OK if I go into night battle.

Line abreast doesn't increase armour, it decreases it but you get insanely high boost to your evasion.

Which wiki did you use? Wikiwiki states that line abreast reduced formation but boost evasion significantly.
