This isn't on any recommended reading lists and I've seen no one talking about it, but I've decided to read いとしのムーコ as my first reading project and I'm having a blast. It's very short chapters (~6-8 pages) about the daily life of a dog who loves her owner very much. The language is simple but throws some interesting words in there (like 神々しい) so you're still learning. The panels also tend to be very vibrant and animated so it's easy to gauge the context of what's going on.

Just thought I'd recommend it if anyone's looking for a wholesome read.
