Just out of curiosity, how does one take the rampant racism and xenophobia in the Japanese culture, even against long standing members of its own society? I see a lot of people eager to move to Japan and embrace its culture, but never realize how much of a socially stratified society it is.

Just read an article on Google adding historical maps of Japan. The move angered the Government because these old maps show where the burukamin live.

There are 3 million burukamin in Japan, and mostly live the same places as their forefathers because "pure" Japs don't want to hire them or sell them property.

>"If we suspect that an applicant is a burakumin, we always do a background check to find out," she said. She agreed to discuss the practice only on condition that neither she nor her company be identified.

>Google Earth's maps pinpointed several such areas. One village in Tokyo was clearly labeled "eta," a now strongly derogatory word for burakumin that literally means "filthy mass." A single click showed the streets and buildings that are currently in the same area.
