It just works. I did it through winetricks on my default wine prefix and it downloaded without issue. This is with Wine 6.6 staging btw.

Works on mine too, although I had to run it through command line to get it to launch.
Now I am at the same situation you are in, with a white box and missing sprites. No idea where to go from here now though to get the game 100% working.

Anon, I don't even know what a WINEDEBUG is. All I did was take the output from Lutris and export it using the option given in the GUI.

I had a dream last night where I met a really cute young lady with PC98 Yuuka's hair and a t-shirt with PC98 Yuuka on it. She said she identified with Yuuka and when I asked (forgot the wording) if that meant she was sadistic she just giggled. The dream had a bunch of other stuff in it, but I don't know how to describe the visuals. This girl was really cute, though. Had a near-perfect face. She looked like she had a nice body, too. I wonder if she's real.
