Well, Touhou is a great example of a fissure between canon and fanon where people regard both as "mixed, but separate".

People tend to promote the things they like and denounce the thinks they don't, because while canon is whatever is in Zun's head, fanon can easily be influenced. If something they like becomes the trend, they get more of it.

It's the ultimate in "stop liking what I don't like", and it's just as futile as any other flavor since in the end the artists will produce whatever their own head canon tells them to.
