The point is just to be a dump for images, which at least some people enjoy on its own. While there are boards dedicated just to imagedumping, I can't think of a case where on-topic dumping on a blue board is clearly hated by nearly everyone on the board, though like you say, it's low-quality if you want more discussion. Most complaints are less about the act of dumping and more what's being dumped, like almost-porn on /v/ or /co/.

Basically, or other threads regarding single characters from doujin/VN/etc. series.
The problem I usually see with all of these threads is the tendency of OPs to not even bother with an image or real comment and just bump threads with junk posts to keep them up. At that point, you're valuing the mere presence of a thread over the content or relevance of the thread, which is inane regardless of whatever intention you might have.
I don't see much purpose in doing that for long, unless you're trying to make a board appear to have more interest in some topic by the number of threads up, rather than by organic discussion of the topic. This probably explains the slap fight going on in at least a few threads, but since the anons doing it are going to make it appear like it isn't just themselves forcing it there is no reason for them to outright admit it.
