Correct, but a father still has the highest authority in regard of her daughter's relationships and eventually her marriage with a man (i.e. telling her to come back before 9, being careful on what kind of friends you have and not throwing shit to your best and childhood friend).
Since no man does actually want some kind of burden to society to marry her daughter, knowing the fact that he will most likely inherit his wealth and will be the father of his own grandchildren. HOWEVER, nowadays, these things and related such as "asking her father for her hand" are considered archaic because it took just one generation of fathers that didn't gave a shit about who their daughter marries nor his own daughter in her whole life.
And now we have a generation of slutty girls that have daddy issues and posts that stuff on Tumblr and /cgl/.

And I would accept that anon's proposal for marrying my daughter since we have something in common (/jp/), just like some new Freemasons marry some old man's granddaughter.
